Is the Bible still Relevant Today?

Let’s find out.

When I was younger, I remember viewing the bible as prehistoric book, written for ancient people and maybe for my grandparents.

It seemed too holy for me.

The gold-trimmed pages and the black leather cover didn’t attract me, not one bit. I avoided any contact with the bible altogether, but not for long.

My perspective on the Bible began to change as I familiarized myself with its teachings. I read through the scriptures and examined them with a critical eye, asking a lot of questions and finding answers through research with the help of trusted friends.

Although finding answers to my questions strengthened my faith, I experienced God’s power when I applied the scriptures to my life. For that reason, I can confidently say that the scriptures are still relevant, still active, and still filled with power.

Woman Shares her Testimony with J. Cole

The woman in the video below had a nonchalant encounter with Grammy-nominated rapper J. Cole while he was filming his documentary for his album 4 Your Eyes Only.  What she shared with him was beyond inspiring.

J. Cole learned that the woman had lost two kids in tragic events, yet she was resilient and filled with hope. This caused him to question the reason for her motivation. I mean, what could possibly keep someone’s spirit so steadfast?

The hope she had in light of her situation transcends understanding, yet her answer was simple, but still profound: God. “Jesus is definitely the answer,” she said.

This woman’s faith must have moved J. Cole in some way. Maybe he pondered on it later on that day, who knows. Nonetheless, a seed was planted in him, and now God can continue to nurture it.

Granted, the woman probably didn’t know or recognize J. Cole since he had to introduce himself before he left. But with the a camera man filming, she must’ve had an idea that he was famous. Yet, she didn’t back down or let the camera scare her; instead, she shared her testimony and brought glory to God.

Book Review: “Ask It” by Andy Stanley

In his book “Ask It,” Andy Stanley focuses on one specific question that if applied to your life correctly will help you make better decisions.  While the book includes numerous examples of real life experiences, it’s also rooted in biblical principles.

The main question is simple, yet powerful and revolutionary. Applying it to your life can help you avoid pitfalls such as financial turmoil, broken relationships, addictions, and more.

The question derives from a scripture found in the book of Ephesians in chapter 5:15-17:

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

Book Review: Total Money Make Over by Dave Ramsey

No matter who you are, money can either be a blessing or a curse depending on how you manage it. As a young college graduate in my mid-twenties, I am now realizing how little I know about money.

Plus, I have student loans to pay back and a wedding coming up soon. This gives me even more reason to stay on top of my finances.

A friend of mine recommended I read “Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey, a book written to help people stay financially fit by following proven steps that have worked for thousands of people around the world.

The good news? This book is not a “get rich quick” type of book. In fact, there is no such thing as “get rich quick,” especially if you want to earn money while still maintaining your integrity. Ramsey teaches about money by using biblical principles, examples from personal experience, and tips learned from studying the habits of wealthy people.

Where Does Faith Come From?

Faith, where does it come from?

Where does your faith come from? This question is so simple yet so complicated, especially if you grew up in a Christian household.

From a young age, my mom took me to church every Sunday, so I automatically believed in God. However, as I grew older I gradually drifted from Christianity.

I didn’t understand why I was going to church. I didn’t feel connected to God. In fact, I didn’t know what it meant to be a Christian.

All I knew was that a guy named Jesus died for the sins of the world, but that’s as far as it went.

And I’m sure a lot of people could relate to this. Continue reading “Where Does Faith Come From?”

4 Things We can Learn About God from The Shack

4 Things I learned from The Shack

When I heard the movie The Shack was coming out in theatres I didn’t know what to expect. I mean, I read the book, and I loved it, but how would they fit the complexity of the book in a two-hour movie? First, there is Mackenzie’s (main character) rocky relationship with God. Second, there is the murder of his little daughter followed by his grief and his distance from God and his family. Third, there is Mackenzie’s encounter with God the father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. And lastly, there is everything else he learns from each person of the trinity. It doesn’t get anymore complex than that!

5 Questions a People Pleaser Should Ask Themselves

Questions a people pleaser should ask themselves

People pleasing is one of those things I’ve struggled with for most of my life, but recently I’ve been more aware of its effects.  I’m also learning that this tendency could have developed from past experiences in my life.

For example, I never felt good enough for my dad. He is gifted at math and physics while I am not, which made me feel like I couldn’t live up to his expectations for me, especially when it came to academics. I felt criticized. And even when I did something well, I didn’t receive that masculine, fatherly affirmation that I desperately needed as an infant and as an adolescent. However, I don’t want to place all the blame on my father for my people pleasing tendencies. I must also take ownership of my own actions and behaviours even if my upbringing did play a part in this struggle.

Lecrae Collaborates with Ty Dolla $ign for New Song

Some may question Lecrae’s decision in making a song with rapper Ty Dolla $ing, but after listening to the song, I don’t see the issue. Yes, Ty Dolla $ign is a secular rapper and usually raps about money, drugs, and sex, but guess what…he is not rapping about that stuff in “Blessings” and neither is lecrae. To the contrary, the song talks about gratitude and giving thanks to God for all the blessings. The lyrics are clean and they bring glory to God, Lecrae’s lyrics specifically;  Ty’s lyrics don’t necessarily talk about God, but he still expresses a positive message. I want to lift up lecrae because he is using his talent and platform to be a light to an industry that desperately needs it.

Why Our Hearts are Deceitful Above All Things

pexels-photo hrat

One of the most insightful scriptures I’ve ever read is Jeremiah 17:9. It speaks so much truth into what human nature is like. Here is what it says:

“The heart is deceitful above all things
    and beyond cure.
    Who can understand it?”

Above All Things

Above all things and beyond cure! I don’t know about you, but that really pops out to me. I mean, your heart, the very centre of your being, your emotions, your will is deceitful above anything else.  The truth is, our motivations change like the hands on a clock. At any given point, I could have the purest motivation in my endeavours, however, in an instance, that could change.

Trapped Behind Bars

As someone who grew up on Hip Hop and has a genuine appreciation for the art form, I can’t help but notice the falsehood and deceit found in the rap industry. The rap industry has a reputation for promoting rappers that succumb to the demands of major labels even if it means rapping lyrics that they don’t believe in or simply don’t live out.
